New housing and related manufacturing is slated to hit Espanola.

The Town of Espanola has secured a new residential and industrial development with the Kilganan Group Ltd. of Little Current.

Beginning Aug. 15, the Manitoulin Island developer begins construction of 19 residential lots in the town's centre. The single dwelling homes on Second Avenue and Amadori Court will be made of steel construction.

In tandem with the home construction, Kilganan plans to develop a steel roll form manufacturing company, Northern Metal Framing Inc., will be housed in Espanola's Industrial Park.

This new business will occupy four acres of the park and create 12 jobs.

The Kilganan Group is a start-up development owned by the Turner family of Little Current.

“Years of work and planning have made this development opportunity possible,”said Mayor Bernie Gagnon in an Aug. 10 press release. “This development will create residential growth, strengthen our position to attract people looking for affordable, quality of life housing options, create jobs and fortify our economic position.”

Gagnon said this is the beginning of “exponential growth opportunities” in the northeastern Ontario paper mill town of 5,500.

In a letter to town council, Kilganan said their reason for choosing Espanola as their development base was due to the town's geographical location, availability of serviced industrial and residential land, and council's pro-active mindset.
