Last Elliot Lake headframe on shaky ground (10/02)

The last mining headframe in Elliot Lake may have a future date with the wrecking ball.

The last mining headframe in Elliot Lake may have a future date with the wrecking ball.

Though Elliot Lake city council has deferred its decision to tear down the Stanleigh Mines headframe, the city is not prepared to spend the money to advance the project as a tourist attraction.

Stanleigh mines was the last uranium mine to close in 1996. The city requested a small headframe be left standing to be used as a tourist attraction. Nothing has been done, and the headframe has become a rusting safety hazard. Rio Algom, which still owns the property, says it would cost $100,000 to revitalize the structure.

Rio is willing to assist the city in erecting a replica head frame. Council will wait to take action until that assurance comes in writing from the company.
