Sudbury medical tech company Flosonics Medical has been named a runner-up in a global competition to accelerate commercialization of the next innovative medical device.
The company was one of five finalists – chosen from 800 applications – to compete for $350,000 in startup funding during the 2019 MedTech Conference in Boston on Sept. 24.
Ultimately, the panel of judges chose Pittsburgh-based Forest Devices as the winner. The company is developing a portable device that helps diagnose blood vessel blockages, helping first responders to triage patients to proper stroke centres.
As a runner-up, Flosonics takes home $25,000 from MedTech Innovator, a leading non-profit startup accelerator based in Los Angeles, Calif.
Flosonics is developing a wireless wearable sensor that uses ultrasound to help monitor blood flow in critically ill patients.
The FloPatch sticks to a patient’s neck, providing real-time data and accurate readings without the need for expensive equipment or extensive training.
