An upcoming conference is expected to further establish Sudbury and Northern Ontario as destinations for ecotourism and ecoadventure tourism, city officials say.

Eco-North 2002 Eco-Nord, a three-day ecotourism conference and the first Canadian event for the United Nations International Year of Ecotourism, will be held in Sudbury from Feb. 6 to 10. The conference will create a venue for individuals and organizations from across the north to explore opportunities, showcase regional tourism possibilities and to discuss how this sector can develop. The trade show component will provide a forum for private-sector tourism players to profile their services. Organizers of the conference say they hope to raise awareness of the nature of the global ecotourism market and the economic benefits of ecotourism and to identify market needs and demands of ecotourism destinations and programs.

The conference will be based at the Ramada Inn in Sudbury, with an EcoAdventure Tourism Trade show, taking place in the former Eatons space in Sudbury's City Centre Mall.

FedNor provided funding of $469,680 to the City of Greater Sudbury for Eco-North 2002 Eco-Nord.
