A Sault Ste. Marie timber company is expanding, thanks to funding from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corp.
The provincial funding agency announced on Nov. 22 that Avery Timber Ltd. would receive $399,850, which would allow the business to expand.
Specifically, the company will expand its production capacity by purchasing a feller-buncher and a log trailer, which will help the company harvest more trees and bring more products to market.
Amanda Williams, administrative manager at Avery Construction, said the company was grateful for the funds to expand its wood-harvesting operation.
"Responsible harvesting of Northern Ontario's sustainable resources is important for our area, and the Ontario government's assistance allows us to continue to create valuable and ongoing employment opportunities,” Willaims said in a news release.
The expansion is expected to create seven new jobs.
Avery Timber is a subsidiary of Avery Construction, which specializes in road building, sewer and water installations and repairs, harvesting, land clearing, material handling, and transportation.
The company established its wood-harvesting arm in 1999. Since then, it has harvested wood for companies including Sustainable Forest Technologies, Ontario Wagner Forest Management, and Domtar.
