The City of Sault Ste. Marie is seeking a new sponsor for its event centre.

On Jan. 17, the city announced it had issued a request for proposals (RFP) from parties interested in retaining the naming rights for the 5,000-seat facility.

Located in the city’s downtown, the centre is currently known as the Essar Centre and owned and operated by the city.

“Naming rights provides an opportunity to create a valuable, positive association with the City of Sault Ste. Marie through marketing, advertising, hospitality, website and promotional opportunities,” said Tom Vair, the city’s deputy CAO of community development and enterprise services, in a news release.

“The successful proponent will gain local, provincial, and national exposure and will be able to use the event centre name and/or logo in its advertising and promotions.”

Essar Steel Algoma (now Algoma) originally secured the rights in July, 2008, with a $1.5-million, 10-year agreement. The current agreement will expire on July 31, 2018.
