Sault Ste. Marie will host the Central Regionals Synchronized Skating Championships in February, 2015.

On Feb. 14, the city announced it was the successful bidder for the event, which is held in Northern Ontario every four years.

“This is a major event for Sault Ste. Marie, one that will fill many of our hotels and provide a significant economic impact to the business community in our city,” said Ian McMillan, executive director of Tourism Sault Ste. Marie. “We are extremely grateful to Skate Canada Northern Ontario and Algoma Region who were instrumental in working with us to secure this unique opportunity.”

The skating event will be incorporated as part of the city’s annual Bon Soo winter carnival.

Sault Ste. Marie has positioned itself as a prime location for sporting events over the last few years, actively pursuing and securing events such as the 2014 Ontario Scotties women’s provincial curling championships, the Under 16 Provincial Championships alpine ski races, and the Telus Cup national midget hockey championship.
