The top 14- and 15-year-old alpine ski racers in Ontario will be gathering next week at Searchmont Resort in Sault Ste. Marie for the annual provincial championships.

The event, which takes place March 6 to 9 and is hosted by the Searchmont Ski Runners, is expected to attract 180 athletes to compete in slalom, giant slalom and super-G races.

In the past, this event has proven to be thrilling to watch, as several alumni have gone on to make the Ontario and Canadian teams. Races begin at 10 a.m. daily.
“This is an exciting opportunity for the general public to watch some high-level racers,” race chair Phil Virene said in a news release. “Searchmont is the ideal location for an event of this caliber, and there are lots of great spots to catch some action first-hand. Bring your cowbells!”

This is the most recent in a string of successful bids to bring major sports events to Sault Ste. Marie. The city recently announced the 2013 Telus Cup National Midget Hockey Championship would be held there in April, and the Ontario Scotties Tournament of Hearts national women’s curling championships will be held in the Sault in January, 2014. The city last hosted the event in 2010.
