Sault airport sets new passenger level record

The Sault Ste. Marie Airport has set a new record for passenger levels.

In May 2019, 17,364 passengers flew to and from the airport, marking an increase of 3 per cent in passenger traffic over that in May 2018.

It was the best month of May in the history of the Sault Ste. Marie Airport Development Corp., which took over ownership and operation of the airport in 1998.

The organization said passenger traffic in the previous month also passed a record.

In April, 16,842 passengers went through the airport, which is an increase of 2.2 per cent over April of 2018.

The numbers mark an overall increase of 2.6 per cent through the first two months of the corporation’s 2019-2020 fiscal year, and a running 12-month total of 214,055 passengers.

The airport has also experienced eight consecutive months of increases in aircraft movements:

March, 2019: 4,331, increase of 3.2 per cent over 2018
February, 2019: 3,205, 7.4 per cent over 2018
January, 2019: 2,589, 11.0 per cent over 2018
December, 2018: 2,706 19.9 per cent over 2017
November, 2018: 3,421, 90 per cent over 2017
October, 2018: 4,173, 45.5 per cent over 2017
September, 2018: 5,525, 36.6 per cent over 2017
August, 2018: 7,138, 30.4 per cent over 2017

The Sault Ste. Marie Airport continues to be served daily by Air Canada Express, Bearskin Airlines, and Porter Airlines, with winter seasonal service provided by Sunwing Airlines.
