Municipalities consider airplane purchase to revive air service (9/02)

Four small towns along the North Shore are prepared to purchase a $1.5-million airplane to reinstate rural air service in the area.

Four small towns along the North Shore are prepared to purchase a $1.5-million airplane to reinstate rural air service in the area. Chapleau, Wawa, Manitouwadge and Hornepayne are proposing a joint purchase of a nine-seater Cessna, which would provide flights in and out of those communities. The towns would fund half the cost of the plane, while Thunder Airlines would put up the balance of the plane's cost, and also provide flight crew and handle reservations.

Under the proposal, the Cessna would fly twice daily between Thunder Bay and a northeastern city, with stops at each of the four cities in between.
