The City of Sault Ste. Marie has secured big-league management as the future operator of its proposed new multi-use arena project, and is approaching the government for more money.

O&Y/SMG, a joint venture of two powerful professional arena and convention centre management firms from Toronto and Philadelphia have been selected by the city’s Arena Study Review Committee to manage the project. The selection was made based on the recommendation of the city’s consultant, the IBI Group.

The city is also dropping the private-sector component for the project and is going back to the government to change the funding formula to build a replacement for the 55-year-old Memorial Gardens, home rink of the city’s Ontario Hockey League franchise.
