An inquest will be held into the 2009 death of James Vecchio, who died while working at a construction site in Sault Ste. Marie.
Vecchio, a city employee, was killed at the age of 34 when a mobile crane toppled into the hole he was working in, crushing him. An inquest, mandatory under the Coroners Act, will examine the circumstances surrounding Vecchio's death. The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths.
Charges of criminal negligence causing death were earlier laid against Anthony Vanderloo, crane owner David Brian Selvers, and #1531147 Ontario Ltd., operating as Millennium Crane Rental of Sault Ste. Marie. Those charges were later dropped.
The inquest is expected to last two weeks and to hear from approximately 20 witnesses.
It will begin at 9:30 am on Monday, April 28, at the Sault Ste. Marie Court House. Dr. Steven Bodley will preside as inquest coroner and Daniel Mitchell will be counsel to the coroner.
