Progress continues to develop an upscale mega-tourist attraction called The Gateway Site.

Sault Ste. Marie Mayor John Rowswell says Toronto developer Philip Garforth is meeting the conditions set out in the business proposal and a request for $15 million to the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corp. is expected within weeks.

Right now the city staff is going through a due diligence process and findings will be brought back to council.

“The funding for all intensive purposes is now in place from the private sector and Garforth has gone through the checks and balances to make the project move forward,” Ian McMillan, executive director of tourism for Sault Ste. Marie, says.

“From a tourism perspective this is very encouraging.”

After more than six years and several unsuccessful bids the city has finally landed a “great team” with a “good financial package,” to move the $53.7 million project forward, economic development president Bruce Strapp explains.
