Danieli Corus Inc. is downsizing its Sault Ste. Marie engineering office and moving most of its staff to southern Ontario.

The company says consolidating its Canadian presence into one location in Burlington is an effort to improve efficiencies and better serve its clients.

John Willcock, manager of the Sault office, says 22 of the 28 staff members - mostly in engineering positions - will be offered the opportunity to transfer, leaving five or six in the city to service Algoma Steel and other local clients with limited engineering services.

He expects the move to be complete by Labour Day. Company management says the relocations will take place during the summer and will be “invisible” to clients.

The overall size of their North American group will remain at 80.

Headquartered in the Netherlands, the company is a supplier of equipment and technology to the primary metals industry around the world particularly in ironmaking, steelmaking, rolling mills and processing line.

Danieli Corus is a partnership of a steel group in the Netherlands and an Italian mill manufacturer, who were the builders of the Algoma Steel’s state-of-the-art rolling mill, the Direct Strip Production Complex.
