Final arrangements are being made to secure more than $40 million in private investment for the former Gateway project, which includes The Garforth

Group and Niagara area developer Rick Holmes.

Any deal on the proposal is subject to city council approval and by the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corp., which allocated $15 million a few years ago for a regional tourism-type project providing the city could secure private financing.

City officials are optimistic of a fall construction start with the venue opening in summer 2006. Some aspects of the original concept, such as a 500-seat performing arts centre theatre, will remain, as well as plans for a 160-room to 180-room hotel.
