Coffee roaster takes first place in Sault pitch contest

Young entrepreneur’s proposal won out over 20 other applicants

Copper Country Coffee Roasters is taking home a prize package valued at $19,000 after delivering the winning proposal during a Sault Ste. Marie business pitch event.

Lars Moffat, who launched the coffee company in 2017, will receive a package including legal services from Laidlaw Paciocco Dumanski Spadafora & Johnson LLP, advertising from Sootoday.com, a Starter Company Plus grant, a Broadband for E-Business and Marketing (BEAM) grant, and cash prizes from TD Canada Trust and KPMG.

The pitch event was held in conjunction with the annual Bridges to Better Business networking event.

The second place winner was Jarrett Longo, owner of MarLo Construction & Millwork.

Based in Sault Ste. Marie, Copper Country Coffee Roasters is producing a line of organic, fair-trade coffee products, which take their names from communities in Northern Ontario, such as Elliot Lake Atomic Roast and Awesomely Algoma Decaf. For every bag sold, the company donates a small portion to charities across the North.

Moffat, 22, was a participant this past summer in the Summer Company program, which assists young entrepreneurs get their business ideas off the ground.

Funded by the Province of Ontario, the program provides training, mentoring and grants to assist students in starting a seasonal business and is facilitated by the Sault Ste. Marie Economic Development Corp.
