Wawa has been granted $100,000 to upgrade its famous goose monument.

The Government of Canada announced on Dec. 21 it was providing the city with the funds to dismantle and ship the statue to Toronto for repairs. A representative with the community later said the funds would be used to replace the statue entirely.

The Wawa goose is integral to the community’s marketing brand and is one of the most photographed landmarks in North America.

The 8.5-metre structure has stood at the entrance to the town since it was erected in 1963, as a roadside attraction to attract people off the highway and into the town.

The goose was chosen for the landmark, as the word ‘Wawa’ comes from the Ojibwe word for goose.

Funds for the project come from the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program.
