Trojan Technologies of London, Ont. has been awarded a $1-million contract to supply North Bay with an ultraviolet drinking-water disinfection system. The UV system was chosen as a stop-gap measure in preparation for a water filtration plant. An environmental assessment for a new filtration facility begins soon and once built, the UV system will be incorporated into it. The contract includes four units capable of treating 21 million gallons of water per day. The city has applied to the province for funds from the Ontario Small Towns and Rural Areas program to pay for the system. North Bay began investigating water-treatment options after new drinking-water regulations were introduced by the province in August 2000.
