The province will establish an interim office and steering committee to oversee marketing and tourism efforts in Northern Ontario.

The interim office will be in North Bay and will ensure continuation of initiatives and services until a new organization is in place by the end of the year, the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines announced. The new organization will be aimed at revitalizing northern tourism marketing.

To begin the operation, and allow the new committee to meet its mandate, the province will invest $613,200 through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corp.

Each of the six Northern Ontario travel associations will receive $75,000 to assist in the delivery of marketing and sales service across the North.

The new committee, Northern Plan, will be in charge of developing a new marketing plan and gathering input from the tourism sector to establish the new organization.

Ted Day, executive director of the Algoma-Nipissing Travel Association, has been appointed general manager.

Committee members include representatives from other travel associations, Ontario Tourism Marketing Partnership, northern municipalities, Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corp., northern attractions and accommodations and the service sector.
