Forty layoff notices were issued to Tembec employees at its Kenogami mill in early August, but the forest products giant vows to keep the planing and sawmill in operation.

In hoping to end speculation about the Kirkland Lake mill's future, the company says the layoffs are only temporary adding they are exploring various scenarios for the Kenogami mill.

The layoffs are part of an overall restructuring the north due in part to the ongoing softwood lumber dispute. Cuts have taken place at the Timmins mill, paring down a 200-employee workforce last year to 85 now.
