Delays with senior levels of government have slowed the progress of a hydroelectric plant in Latchford, in the Timiskaming District.

Delays with senior levels of government have slowed the progress of a hydroelectric plant in Latchford, in the Timiskaming District.

FedNor has contributed $66,000 for an environmental assesment of the project and Northern Ontario Heritage Fund has allocated $52,000 for feasibility studies.

With the transfer of the Latchford Control Dam from federal to municipal control now complete, along with a $4.6-million reconstruction commitment in place, the plan to add generating capacity has resulted in a spate of environmental studies and regulatory approvals.

But the project is close to the design and build stage with the federal environmental review process expected to be complete by summer's end.

The town intends to use the station, which is estimated to generate 0.9 megawatts of power, as a new stream of revenue used towards municipal infrastructure improvements and expects to generate about $350,000 worth of power annually.
