Kirkland Lake's dream of a major tourist project dedicated to Canadian hockey received a $3.5-million boost from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund.

Minister of Northern Development and Mines Jim Wilson delivered the cheque in Kirkland Lake Oct. 1. The funding will be put toward building a $9.6-million attraction commemorating the achievement of Canadian hockey, coaches and builders.

The proposed location is vacant land next to the Miners Memorial. The Hockey Heritage North committee has further applied for federal funding and plans for a corporate-donation drive.

The 16,000-square-foot building will preserve a collection of historical artifacts, photographs, literature and hockey memorabilia valued at more than $1 million, as well as feature many interactive displays and theme exhibits.
