The Town of Cobalt is set to enhance its tourism profile with some help from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC).

The province has agreed to chip in $1,102,520 toward the development of the Cobalt Historic Mining Camp.

“Cobalt’s rich mining history makes it a perfect venue for this project that will attract more visitors, boost the local economy and help preserve our heritage,” Minister of Natural Resources David Ramsay said in a news release. “This undertaking corresponds with the vision and long-term objectives of the Northern Prosperity Plan, which has laid the foundation for hope and prosperity in the North.”

Cobalt is one of only three industrial historic districts in the country.

The NOHFC investment will help develop feature attractions such as a welcome centre, a Great Canadian Mine Show, a Mining Museum and a Bunker Military Museum.

FedNor, Human Resources Development Canada, the Town of Cobalt and the Township of Coleman are also partners.

“The natural, historical and cultural attractions Northern Ontario has to offer are on par with other world-class tourism destinations,” said Rick Bartolucci, NOHFC chair. “This project will add to the North’s impressive attractions that strive to draw more visitors to the region throughout the four seasons.”
