Boart Longyear has cut 22 jobs at its North Bay plant in a move to centralize its diamond-drill bit manufacturing operation in Salt Lake City, Utah. Company officials say two plants were producing the same product and both were running at 40 per cent capacity. The cuts leave 130 employees remaining at the facility. The facility will concentrate on providing manufacturing drill rods and wireline core barrels. A new manufacturing line is being installed for operation in late August. Boart officials say they maintain a long-term commitment to North Bay, adding the plant is well-positioned to take on more production with their minority purchase of a leading Brazilian contract drilling company.
