Ban on transport of toxic substances not endorsed by Tri-Towns (7/02)

A resolution passed by Armour Township on Highway 11 to ban transport of toxic substances on provincial highways and rail lines failed to gain support from Haileybury and New Liskeard.

A resolution passed by Armour Township on Highway 11 to ban transport of toxic substances on provincial highways and rail lines failed to gain support from Haileybury and New Liskeard.

The June 11 resolution by the Burk's Falls municipality fully endorsed the wishes of Public Concern Temiskaming, a citizen's environmental group fighting a proposed hazardous waste incinerator for Kirkland Lake.

The resolution went to municipalities from Kirkland Lake to Windsor.

Tri-Towns politicians say the resolution is too vague since toxic substances such as chlorine gas for water treatment plans and sulphuric acid for the mining industry are transported every day.

The Town of New Liskeard has come up against Bennett Environmental's incinerator proposal saying the province's environmental assessment process does not address all social and environmental concerns over the project.
