American travellers coming across the border might have something to do with the record number of passengers using the Sault Ste. Marie Airport.

The Sault Ste. Marie Airport Development Corporation (SSMADC) reported passenger traffic during the month of June was 8.12 per cent compared to the same month last year.

The corporation reported that 18,074 passengers went through the terminal, bringing the year-to-date total to 216,172. That’s a record in the 21 years of private ownership of the airport.

“The SSMADC is very encouraged by the continuing increase in passenger levels, and the marked increase in the number of American licence plates seen at the airport,” said corporation president-CEO Terry Bos in a July 6 news release.

For the first quarter (April to June) of the corporation’s fiscal year, the airport saw a 3.29 per cent increase in passenger levels from 49,776 in 2017 to 51,416 in 2018.

In the past 12 months the Sault Ste. Marie Airport set two new records for overall passenger levels in a single month.

The airport has daily service provided by Air Canada Express, Bearskin Airlines, and Porter Airlines.
