Potash shipments through the Port of Thunder Bay are on pace to beat a 40-year record.
The port authority reported strong cargo volume during the month of June, including recording 202,783 tonnes for this past month, besting the 157,283-tonne mark set in June 2024.
So far, 532,626 tonnes of potash have moved through the port since the opening of the shipping season in March. Last year at the same time, 574,351 tonnes had transitted the port.
The authority said the 1.19 million tonnes of cargo shipped is the largest June tally seen at the western Superior port in decades with mix of grains, potash, aggregates, phosphate and steel.
For the year to date, just under 3 million tonnes of grain moving through the port, 14 per cent above the five-year average.
The authority expects that trend to continue through the remainder of this year.
Of the 59 vessels that arrived in port last month, six were cruise ships.
