After almost a two-decade run, Tim Heney is retiring as CEO of Thunder Bay’s port authority.

A July 14 news release from the Port of Thunder Bay said Heney recently informed the board of directors that he’s targeting Sept. 30 as his last day, but he’ll stay on until the board finds his replacement.

An executive search firm has been hired to help find his successor.

Heney has held the job since May 2004.

In a statement, Board Chair Bonny Skene said Heney has made significant contributions toward transforming the western Lake Superior port facility.

“Since his appointment as CEO in 2004, Tim has been instrumental in establishing Keefer Terminal at the Port of Thunder Bay, as a major breakbulk hub for Western Canada and developing key transportation infrastructure that ensures the efficient and effective movement of cargoes.”

Skene said the board will looking for someone with strong leadership skills and a “proven track record” of running a similar sized operation combined with an ability to map out and execute a growth strategy of “operational excellence and outstanding talent development.”

“It has been an honour and a privilege to serve the Port and I will cherish the friendships that I have made across Canada and the United States in my time as CEO,” said Heney in the release.

“Our strategy is clearly working, we are pleased with our accomplishments and we are even more excited about the future of the Port of Thunder Bay, the farthest inland Canadian port on the St. Lawrence Seaway system.”
