THUNDER BAY — Jet service is about to resume at the Thunder Bay Airport.

The Thunder Bay International Airports Authority says the rehabilitation of the primary runway is now complete.

Full-length operations on the runway will start up at 7 p.m. on Saturday, about two weeks ahead of schedule.

The runway has been closed since May to allow for resurfacing and the installation of new lighting and other infrastructure. Its reopening means Air Canada and Flair Airlines can resume jet service to Thunder Bay.

Air Canada will reintroduce Airbus service on Oct. 19, while Flair will re-start service on Nov. 1.

In December, Sunwing will return with its charter service.

Airport president and CEO Ed Schmidtke said, "The planning and coordination undertaken by our staff to create the conditions that resulted in this timely reopening is greatly appreciated."

Airport services manager Ryan Brading also expressed gratitude to the key contractors on the job, including engineering firm Avia NG and local companies Pioneer Construction and Nadin Contracting.
