Sudbury’s Laurentian University has recruited Dr. Rui Wang as its new vice-president of research.

The move becomes next Jan. 15 and has a renewable term ending June 30, 2020.

Wang comes from a thriving research and innovation culture at Lakehead where he currently is vice-president of research, economic development and innovation.

He led Lakehead’s upward movement in the independent research rankings as one of the top 25 research universities in Canada.

Last October, Lakehead was announced as Ontario’s number one research university in the undergraduate category of this year’s annual ranking of Canada’s Top 50 Research Universities.

Wang is the author of two books, holds four patents, and lists 145 published papers.

Trained in China as a medical doctor, Wang later received his PhD degree from the University of Alberta in 1990.

Before arriving at Lakehead in 2004, Wang was a professor of physiology and the leader of the Cardiovascular Research Group and Cardiovascular and Respiratory Network at the University of Saskatchewan.

Wang was an associate professor at the University of Saskatchewan (1997-2001), a principal investigator in Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory and an assistant professor at the Université de Montréal.

Wang is regarded as an outstanding scientist and innovator, and his research on cardiovascular physiology and pathophysiology has been funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council, other funding agencies, and industry.
