French-speaking women in Sudbury interested in entering the electrical trades can opt in to a free training program, starting this summer.

Collège Boréal is offering a 20-week pre-apprenticeship program in the skills required to achieve Level 1 electrical training.

Participants will additionally receive certifications in hoisting and rigging, lockout/tagout, and working at heights.

The program includes an eight-week work placement in the electrical field.

“Not only is this program offered at no cost to participants, but all safety equipment (boots, goggles and gloves), as well as manuals, are also provided free of charge,” noted Christine St-Pierre, Collège Boréal’s pre-apprenticeship coordinator, in a June 5 news release.

The college said programs like this one aim to encourage more women to enter fields that are traditionally male-dominated.

The Women in Electrical pre-apprenticeship program begins on July 17, 2023.
