Collège Boréal is offering two French language pre-apprenticeship programs free of charge at its Sudbury campus this summer.
The Heavy Equipment Technician for Women course starts July 7, and the Industrial Mechanic Millwright course begins on Aug. 18.
Both are offered in French only and they are free to attend for those eligible.
A pre-apprenticeship program is designed to help participants boost their skills in preparation to enter an apprenticeship program in a skilled trade. The programs offered vary from year to year.
Programs run for a maximum of 42 weeks and include an eight-week workplace placement. Funding from the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development covers the cost of tuition, protective equipment, and manuals.
The Heavy Equipment Technician for Women program is designed for women who want to pursue a career in the heavy equipment field.
It will run full time for 30 weeks, which includes a week of orientation, 21 weeks of in-class training, and an eight-week work placement.
Participants will complete the equivalent of Level 1 training for trades 421A/310T (Heavy Equipment Technician/Truck and Coach Technician). The program includes upgrading and employment support services.
The Industrial Mechanic Millwright program is designed for those looking to become a millwright, which involves the installation, repair, and maintenance of industrial machines and equipment, including mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems.
It runs for 27 weeks, including an eight-week work placement, and participants will complete the equivalent of Level 1 training for trade 433A (Industrial Mechanic Millwright).
Upgrading and employment support services are included.
