Confederation College shutters Wawa campus

Low enrolment, small catchment area a deterrent in keeping building open

Thunder Bay's Confederation College is permanently closing its Wawa campus.

A March 31 statement from Neil Cooke, the college's academic vice-president, said the population in the catchment area of Wawa is small and the low enrolment is "not sustainable for us to maintain the physical campus."

Students from the area can continue their studies through distance education.

"While we will no longer have a bricks and mortar location, our commitment to the Wawa community remains strong," Cooke said.

"We are deeply grateful for the relationships we’ve built and the support we’ve received in the Wawa community and look forward to our continued collaboration to change lives through learning for Wawa residents."

The Wawa campus opened its doors on Boyer Street in May 2011, one of eight regional sites a the time in the Confederation network.

Confederation said it doesn't anticipate any further changes of this nature to other campus operations.
