Confederation College opens new tech centre

Thunder Bay TEC Hub home to skilled trades, researchers, innovators

Confederation College in Thunder Bay officially opened its $19-million Technology, Education and Collaboration (TEC) Hub on Oct.19.

The 45,000-square-foot building, which is grafted onto the college’s McIntyre Building, is the new home of the college’s engineering technology and aerospace manufacturing programs.

In a news release, college officials expect the facility to have an “immediate impact on the region” with its advanced manufacturing capabilities, incubation space and services in research, innovation and technology transfer available for individuals, community and regional groups.

The college said the building opens the door to develop new programming as industry requires.

Stantec Architecture handled the building’s design through a joint venture, design-build arrangement with Penn-Co Construction Canada (2003), the contractors. Collier Project Leaders was hired by the college to do the project management.

Funding for the building came from Ottawa, Queen’s Park, the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation, the Thunder Bay Community Economic Development Commission and the college.
