Thunder Bay ski hill converts to private club (8/02)

Plans are underway to keep Thunder Bay's Candy Mountain ski hill open this winter by establishing a private club.

Plans are underway to keep Thunder Bay's Candy Mountain ski hill open this winter by establishing a private club.

A deal was being finalized in late July by Ernie Smith, now a Quebec resident, with owner Ward Bond to have the hill turned into a club and owned by its members. The deal was expected to be complete in early August.

The hill will sell for $200,000 with the new group assuming $400,000 of the hill's debt. Shares will sell for $1,000 each, and families must purchase additional shares for those older than 18. An annual fee will cover a winter's worth of skiing for members, and the hill's maintenance costs. Operators hope 600 people will commit by Aug. 30.
