Geologists from Laurentian University are joining the effort to find new gold and copper-zinc deposits in the Timmins-Kirkland Lake area this summer.

Laurentian’s Mineral Exploration Research Centre is joining a team of 14 geologists from the University of Ottawa, the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, the Geological Survey of Canada and the Ontario Geological Survey to conduct geological studies as part of the Discover Abitibi project.

Discover-Abitibi is an industry-wide initiative aimed at finding new mineral deposits in the Abitibi-Greenstone belt of the Canadian Shield in northeastern Ontario.

The researchers will participate in extensive field mapping of the region this summer. Next year they will be using global positioning system receivers and computerized mapping devices, and doing laboratory work involving chemical analysis of rocks.

“We are extremely proud of the key role that Laurentian earth scientists will play in shaping the area’s economic future,” said Laurentian University President Dr. Judith Woodsworth in a news release.

“This contract, along with the University’s new PhD program in geology, reflects Laurentian’s growing expertise and international leadership in the field of mineral exploration.”
