The provincial Coroner’s Office has announced an inquest into a 2017 fatality that occurred at Barrick Gold’s Hemlo Mine near Marathon.

Dr. Michael Wilson, regional supervising coroner for the North Region, Thunder Bay office, said an inquest will look into the circumstances surrounding the death of Eulogio “Bot” Gutierrez, 59, who died on Nov. 27, 2017 from injuries sustained while working underground at the mine.

An inquest is mandatory under the Coroners Act.

The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing future injuries and deaths.

Gutierrez, who had worked for Barrick since 1987, was a survey technician at Hemlo.

According to a statement issued by Barrick at the time, Gutierrez died after being hit by a piece of mobile equipment.

No other injuries were reported.

Gutierrez left behind a wife, a son, and a daughter.

The inquest will start on Monday, Nov. 16 in a Thunder Bay boardroom. It's expected to last five days and will hear from approximately five witnesses.

Dr. Jennifer Tang will preside as inquest coroner and Rob Kozak will be counsel to the coroner.
