Richmont Mines wants to snatch up graduates of Northern College’s underground hard rock miner common core program.

Ten students were given job offers after they completed the on-site portion of their training at Richmont’s Island Gold Mine in Dubreuilville.

Northern delivers its 12-week program through a partnership with Richmont.

Students spend two weeks in the classroom then spend ten weeks learning underground mining practices.

“Our partners ensure that our students are learning to use the tools and techniques actually used on the jobsite, allowing them to learn in an operational mine,” said college president Fred Gibbons in an April 17 release. “It’s no wonder that our partners tend to hire our graduates with such enthusiasm.”

Northern has graduated 167 miners since the program was launched in 2009.
