The Sudbury office of the Regional Supervising Coroner has announced an inquest into the death of Sudbury man Mark Beskorowany, 54, who died at a surface mining operation in River Valley at a granite quarry on Aug. 19, 2019.

The Sudbury office of the Regional Supervising Coroner has announced an inquest into the death of a Sudbury man, who died while working at a surface mining operation in River Valley six years ago.

Mark Beskorowany, 54, died from injuries received while working in a granite quarry on Aug. 19, 2019 doing work related to drilling.

The news release from the coroner's office said Beskorowany died from his injuries two days later, on Aug. 21, 2019.

Information from the Ministry of Labour at the time said Beskorowany was employed by Consbec Inc. of Val Caron.

The employee was critically injured while drilling in a quarry, said MOL spokesperson Janet Deline in an email at the time. Also, no additional information was released with respect to the circumstances surrounding the death.

No details have yet been provided by the coroner's office with respect to the date and venue for the inquest. The Ministry of the Solicitor General said that information is to be provided at a later date.

The inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding Beskorowany’s death. Statistics available from the Ministry of Labour website for 2019 showed his was the only mining-related fatality in Ontario that year.

The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing further deaths, said the news release.

The coroner's office said a death investigation process is carried out during an inquest, which is a process wherein a coroner or forensic pathologist seeks to understand how and why a person died. A coroner or forensic pathologist must answer five questions when investigating a death: who (identity of the deceased); when (date of death); where (location of death); how (medical cause of death); and by what means (natural causes, accident, homicide, suicide or undetermined).
