West Red Lake Gold Mines is reporting the death of an employee working underground at its Madsen Mine in Red Lake.
A news release from the Vancouver gold company said the incident occurred early on the morning of June 16.
Mining operations have been suspended as the company said it’s working with the Ministry of Labour and local authorities as an investigation and comprehensive review are underway.
“The health, safety and well-being of our employees is our top priority,” the company said in the release. “The thoughts of management are with the family, friends and colleagues who have been impacted by this tragic incident.
Commercial production restarted at Madsen last month, the first time since its former operator, Pure Gold, entered CCAA protection in October 2022. West Red Lake acquired the mine the next year in a court-ordered sales process.
