The Thunder Bay District Health Unit says at least three individuals who work at Barrick Hemlo, Williams Mine near Marathon have tested positive for COVID-19.
All three are associated with a specific, but unnamed, work area at the mine.

The health unit, in a release issued on Thursday, says it is working with mine management to assess if any other workers were exposed and to identify and follow up with any potential contacts outside the mine.

“The mine has already undertaken many measures to reduce any spread of the virus at the mine site. These are currently being enhanced and reinforced and the mine has communicated these enhancements to its employees, contractors, the community and First Nation partners. Further measures will be taken as needed to manage this situation,” the release reads.

Anyone not contacted by a public health nurse should consider themselves low-risk.

“If as the investigation unfolds additional close contacts are identified they will be contacted directly by a public health nurse.”
