Annual workshop for geoscience students returning to Sudbury

The COVID-19 pandemic put the Sudbury mining exploration workshop on hold for the past two and a half years

The annual exploration trip to Sudbury for mining students from across Canada is back on for 2023, after a three-year hold because of the pandemic.

The annual event known as S-IMEW, the Student-Industry Mineral Exploration Workshop, will take place in May of 2023..

The original S-IMEW workshop was launched in 2007 by the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) to bring some of Canada's senior geoscience students to Sudbury for hands-on mineral exploration workshops and face time with representatives of the mining exploration industry.

PDAC said the 2023 version of S-IMEW will last for two weeks and will bring more than two dozen students to the city to learn the technical and business applications of mineral exploration that are not normally included in academic studies.

The last S-IMEW event took place in Sudbury in May of 2019.

PDAC said the S-IMEW workshop is focused on the Canadian mineral exploration industry, introducing and affirming many of the applied aspects of the industry through practical mineral exploration techniques, field skills development, familiarization with a variety of mineral deposit models and related economic geology.

In addition, S-IMEW provides students with opportunities to practise their networking skills and make valuable contacts with key industry representatives, potential future employers and mentors, said PDAC.

Students have the opportunity to learn more about the following matters:

  • mineral economics and valuations;
  • field trips to world-class mining camps;
  • geological mapping and interpretation, geophysics and geochemistry;
  • health and safety, environmental and social governance;
  • capital markets, financing alternatives and business arrangements;
  • development of networking skills;
  • alumni perspectives and career paths; and
  • professional registration.

Colleges and universities are being invited to nominate one or two senior students who are planning to pursue a career in the mineral exploration industry. The national prospectors' organization said nominations for the annual event must be filed by Dec. 9 of this year.
