Workplace Safety & Prevention Services will hold its 2015 health and safety conference and trade show in Sudbury on September 24.

The Partners in Prevention Northeastern Ontario 2015 conference will take place at the Steelworkers’ Union Hall and Conference. The event will offer concurrent workshops on the latest health, safety and wellness issues from authorities in the field, including speakers from local companies.

Allan Kehler, an author and instructor at the Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technology, will give the breakfast keynote address. He will share personal and professional stories about the issues related to mental health and addictions, and offer insight on how to overcome self-harming behaviours.

A key tenet of his beliefs is that a workplace can be transformed into an environment free from judgment where stigma is replaced with compassion. In turn, this can decrease the number of accidents, and lead to enhanced productivity, less turnover, and heightened team morale.

During the networking lunch, participants will get an opportunity to consult with experts in an open mic session. Experts include John Reid, district manager with the Ministry of Labour (MOL); Colette Villeneuve, employment standards officer with the MOL; and Robert Harper, safety group program consultant with Workplace Safety & Insurance Board. Trevor Beauchamp, regional manager of consulting services for Workplace Safety & Prevention Services, will moderate the discussion.

Participants will have the opportunity to talk directly with ministry representatives, learn firsthand what the MOL is paying particular attention to when they visit Ontario workplaces, get answers to your Employment Standards, Return to Work and Claims Management questions, and learn more about the many tools and resources available to help you control workplace hazards.
