Laurentian University in Sudbury is the recipient of provincial funding for research projects that aim to reduce injuries, illnesses and fatalities in the workplace.

Two Laurentian University research projects are among the recipients of provincial funding aimed at reducing workplace injuries, illnesses and fatalities.

The province is providing $2.7 million to 13 projects under its Research Opportunities Program.

Laurentian will receive $197,472 to study line-of-sight perceptions and reversing technologies to increase situational awareness in the construction industry.

According to a synopsis, “The aim of the research is to launch an industry-wide survey of attitudes towards interactions between humans and equipment, knowledge of safe work practices for heavy equipment and pedestrians, workers’ compliance with safety behaviour and knowledge of line-of-sight and safe working distances around heavy equipment.”

Another $56,592 has been allotted for a project evaluating the impact of simulator training at the Northern Centre for Advanced Technology (NORCAT) for improving mining health and safety outcomes.

“The research will also determine whether demographics like age, gender, previous training or work experience have any bearing on how trainees respond to simulator training, and how well the simulator training transfers to real-world performance on health and safety related measures,” according to a release.
