Ellsin Environmental Ltd. will establish the plant to test a patented process for reclaiming used tires after a $2 million investment by the province's Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation.

The plant will use green technology that breaks scrap tires down into their original components – carbon black, gas, oil and steel. Some of the recovered materials have the potential to generate power.

Dalton McGuinty was in Sault Ste. Marie July 16 for the announcement and to attend a ceremony at Essar Steel Algoma and the start up of their co-generation facility.

As many as 25 jobs will be created when the plant launches.

The province funded the plant in an effort to break down some of the 2.8 million used tires currently stockpiled across Ontario.
