The acquisition of the power generating station by the municipality of West Nipissing, which includes Sturgeon Falls, is considered a crucial element of the area’s strategy to attract new business and industry to the area. The local economy suffered a setback with the closure of Weyerhaeuser’s containerboard plant in December 2002. The West Nipissing Community Adjustment and Recovery Committee was struck to develop some immediate and long-term plans to mitigate the economic impact of the mill closure.
