The Ministry of Northern Development and Mines is contributing $4.5 million toward the acquisition and future expansion of the Weyerhaeuser power plant in Sturgeon Falls.

The acquisition of the power generating station by the municipality of West Nipissing, which includes Sturgeon Falls, is considered a crucial element of the area’s strategy to attract new business and industry to the area. The local economy suffered a setback with the closure of Weyerhaeuser’s containerboard plant in December 2002.
