Residents, business owners, and municipal leaders from Manitoulin Island and the North Shore will gather Feb. 21 and 22 to share concerns about energy needs and learn about community energy planning.

Green Economy North, based in Sudbury, is hosting public information sessions in five communities as the next step in the Smart Green Communities project. These information sessions will be held in Kagawong, Gore Bay, and Mindemoya on Feb. 21, and Blind River and Massey on Feb. 22.

“Talking to community members is the best way to learn about their concerns about energy, and the actions they are taking in their homes and businesses,” said Richard Eberhardt, program director for Green Economy North, in a Feb. 13 news release.

“Municipal leaders are concerned about their communities’ long-term energy needs, the rising cost of energy, and practical ways to reduce climate change impacts. Hearing how energy needs are changing in local communities is the first step to a successful project.”

Green Economy North is taking action with the municipalities to identify areas of inefficiencies, and suggesting improvements to reduce emissions and lower operating costs of municipal operations. Upgrades to lighting and heating systems are examples of possible projects that could have major return on investment. The project has the potential to consider energy usage across the entire community.

The one-hour public information sessions will provide information on community energy planning, and offer the opportunity for input on the energy needs of residents, businesses, and community organizations. Interested individuals are invited to attend their closest session:
