The City of Timmins has selected FVB District Energy of Toronto to conduct a feasibility study to take mine waste water from the abandoned McIntyre and Hollinger mines and convert it into a possible heat source for municipal buildings.

Funding applications have been made to FedNor and the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund, as well as under the FCM Green Municipal Funds program to assist in the feasibility study tabbed at more than $216,000.

The partnership opportunity involves the former Kinross Gold Corp., now the Porcupine Joint Venture, the Timmins District Hospital and the city, which will provide project management support and has secured private-sector contribution to leverage government funding.
