Stop playing politics, says Canadian Chamber of Commerce

With a world financial crisis at hand and the leadership of Parliament at a standstill, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce is urging all federal MP's to concentrate on the well-being of families instead of playing politics.

With a world financial crisis at hand and the leadership of Parliament at a standstill, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce is urging all federal MP's to concentrate on the well-being of families instead of playing politics.

In a December 2 statement, the Board of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce wants a government commitment to consult with Canada's business community, lower levels of government and other key stakeholders in preparing a strategy to present to the public in the coming weeks.

The chamber wants priority infrastructure projects identified and an economic stimulus package based on "realistic assumptions" about the forecast of the national economy, with a clear plan to avoid long-term debt.

Those sentiments are echoed by the North Bay and District Chamber of Commerce. Vice-president Sean Lawlor encourages all MP's to focus in a "non-partisan manner towards advancing these principles."

Instead of aiming at the political gains and posturing since the last week's tabling of Finance Minister Jim Flaherty's Economic Update, MP's should take heed of the severe toll the financial crisis is taking on Canadians, said the chamber.

"The single most significant issue facing businesses and all Canadians is the financial crisis," said Lawlor. "It is critical that all efforts be focused on implementing strategies designed to improve our economy. Canadians deserve no less from their elected officials."
