The federal government is soon to announce new mandatory training and a funding review that will curb serious liabilities posed by unqualified staff at water treatment plants, and aging water treatment plants on reserves. The announcement came days after the release of the final Walkerton inquiry report, which devoted a separate chapter to First Nations. Health Canada's First Nations Inuit and Health branch recently confirmed 67 of 867 water systems on reserves in Canada still pose serious enough risks that residents must boil water.
The situation seems to be more grave among remote and semi-remote communities, some of which have gone 10 or 15 years without healthy, clean water.
